Performance reviews

Set up a review cycle, write your self-review, and as a manager review your team and share it with them.

Reviews are in People โ†’ Reviews. Everyone sees My review. Managers also see My team's reviews, and Admins and HR see Review cycles.

How a review works

  1. HR sets up a review cycle. Each person in it is told it's time to write their self-review.
  2. Each person writes a self-review and sends it in. Only they see it until then. Their manager is told when it's in.
  3. Their manager writes the manager review, with the same questions and a rating.
  4. The manager shares it. The person is told, and can then read the manager review and rating.

Ratings go from 1 to 5:

  • 1 Needs improvement
  • 2 Partly meets
  • 3 Meets
  • 4 Exceeds
  • 5 Outstanding

Setting up a cycle (Admins and HR)

Choose New review cycle and give it:

  • a name, such as "2026 annual review"
  • the period: annual, half-yearly or quarterly, with its start and end dates (we fill in the end date for you)
  • who's in it: everyone on the team, or chosen people
  • the due date
  • the questions. It starts with goals met, strengths, areas to improve and an overall rating. Change, add or remove questions, as written answers or ratings. Once anyone has started their review, the questions are fixed.

Open a cycle to see its progress: how many self-reviews and manager reviews have been sent in, and how many have been shared. From there you can add people, take out someone who hasn't sent anything in, change the dates, and close the cycle when it's done. A closed cycle can't be changed, but everyone can still read their review. You can reopen it.

Who sees what

  • The person sees their own self-review, and the manager review and rating only after their manager shares it.
  • Their manager sees their team's self-reviews once they're sent in, and writes the manager review. The manager is who they report to on the Team page.
  • Admins and HR see everything that's been sent in, across the company.
  • Drafts are private to whoever is writing them, until they send them in.

Nobody can write their own manager review. If someone has no manager, an Admin or HR writes it for them.

Order and the due date

The manager can start their review at any time, but can only send it in once the self-review is in. If the self-review still isn't in after the due date, the manager can send theirs in without it, so nothing gets held up.

Once a review is sent in it can't be changed. A shared review can't be unshared.

Reminders

In the three days before the due date, anyone still to send in their self-review gets a reminder, and so does any manager still to send in theirs. Reminders come once, as a notification in MSMEPulse and on the mobile app.
