The firm's budget

Set a monthly budget for revenue, spending and payroll for the financial year, and see how you're doing against it.

Budget in the menu (under Finance) holds the firm's budget for a financial year, month by month, and compares it with what you actually invoiced and spent. Admins and people with the Finance role can see it. To change it, you also need to edit budgets and rates for the whole firm (Admins and Finance can).

The year follows your financial year: April to March in India, July to June in Australia, and the start month you chose in Company details elsewhere.

What's in the budget

  • Revenue: what you invoice, before tax, less credit notes. Invoices brought in as opening balances aren't counted.
  • Expenses, by category: company expenses and approved staff claims, before tax.
  • Vendor bills, by category: each bill line, before tax. A category that isn't on the list counts as Other.
  • Payroll, if you run payroll in MSMEPulse: gross pay and employer contributions from approved runs. Only people with payroll access see this line. Claims paid with salary are counted under Expenses, not here.

Amounts are in your home currency. Expenses and bills in other currencies aren't included; invoices in other currencies are converted at their own rate.

Start a budget

  1. Choose the Financial year.
  2. Click Copy last year's actuals. Each month gets what was invoiced and spent in the same month last year. You can raise or lower every figure by a percentage, for example 10 for 10% more. This replaces any figures already in that year's budget.
  3. Click Edit budget to change any figure. Amounts are whole units, before tax. Type a figure in the Year column to spread it evenly over the twelve months.
  4. Click Save budget.

See how you're doing

Choose a Period: year to date (the months so far, including this one), the whole year, or one month. For each line you see the budget, the actual and the variance.

Variance is good when it's positive: revenue above budget, or spending below it. Negative variances are shown in red. Lines with nothing budgeted or spent are hidden; click Show every line to see them.

For a spreadsheet, open Reports โ†’ Budget against actual. It covers whole months in the dates you choose, and you can download it or have it emailed to you.

Payroll in the cash forecast

If you run payroll in MSMEPulse and have payroll access, Reports โ†’ Cash forecast (13 weeks) also shows salaries and payroll taxes and contributions:

  • Net pay of runs that aren't finalised yet, on your pay day (set in Payroll settings). If the pay day has passed, it's in the first week.
  • Statutory payments on their usual due dates. India: TDS by the 7th of the next month (30 April for March), PF and ESI by the 15th. Singapore: CPF, with SDL and SHG, by the 14th, and the Foreign Worker Levy on the 17th.
  • Months not run yet are estimated from the latest monthly run.

Professional tax and LWF aren't included, as their dates depend on the state.
